Methylhexaneamine (1, 3-dimethylamylamine) – UPDATE

Methylhexaneamine (1, 3-dimethylamylamine) – Why this is now a problem.
We previously covered the topic 1, 3, Dimethylamyaline (Geranium Oil) back in September of 2010; after receiving an alarming number of emails and responses from clients and followers on various social media websites.    We thought it would be a good idea to address some of your questions.

What is Methylhexaneamine?
Methylhexaneamine is a weak stimulant that was first trademarked under the name ‘Forthane’ by Eli Lilly in April of 1971 as a nasal decongestant.  The trademark has long expired, but Methylhexaneamine has continued to grow in popularity over the years.

Why is Methylhexaneamine banned by some sport organizations?
Methylhexaneamine is considered a stimulant; most sport governing bodies around the world consider most stimulants to be banned, including Methylhexaneamine.

I’ve asked about a particular product in the past and it was fine, so why is it banned now?
In 1994, the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) passed into law and radically changed the dietary supplement marketplace.  DSHEA expanded the category of dietary supplements further to include:
·                Ginseng
·                Fish oils
·                Enzymes
·                DHEA and more
DSHEA removed much of the FDA's control over dietary supplements and as a result created what is considered to be a virtually unregulated industry.  Some supplement products change frequently (quarterly, yearly, etc…), others are forced to change because of market recalls.  This uncertainty is why we must continue to check dietary supplement ingredients, because last year’s formula could be obsolete and the new product could include ingredients banned for athletes.

I did not see Methylhexaneamine listed as an ingredient, could it be listed as something else?
Yes.  Here are the most common names (synonyms) that we have seen listed in dietary supplements; if you come across any of these names in an ingredients list, I advise you to not consume.
1, 3-dimethylamylamine (Most common – This is updated from the September blog)
·         Geranium oil extract
·         Geranuim oil
·         Geranium extract
·         Geranamine (trademarked by Proviant Technologies)
·         Methylhexanamine
·         DMAA
·         Forthane
·         Forthan
·         Floradrene
·         4-methyl-2-hexanamine
·         4-Methylhexan-2-amine
·         2-amino-4-methylhexane
·         2-hexanamine, 4-methyl-
·         2-hexanamine, 4-methyl- (9CI)
·         1,3-dimethylamylamine
·         1,3-dimethylpentylamine
·         Pentylamine, 1, 3-dimethyl-

So should I be worried if the label only lists Geranium oil and no other synonyms?
Yes, Geranium oil (extract) is often used in place of Methylhexaneamine or 1, 3-dimethylamylamine because the general public views Geranium oil to be a ‘natural’ substance and thus ‘safe’.  Geranium is a nonessential trace element that has caused nephrotoxicity (kidney injury) and death when used chronically by humans, even at recommended levels of use.

What products do you commonly find these ingredients listed in?
The most common product that we receive questions on still remains to be Jack3d by USP Labs.  Jack3d, lists, [1, 3 Dimethylamylamine] and caffeine.  The following is a list of the top 10 product names, manufacture and banned (problematic) ingredients as listed on the label, in order of most popular.
1.           Jack3d – USPlabs (1,3 Dimethylamylamine (Geranium [Stem], caffeine)
2.           OxyELITE Pro – USPlabs (1,3 Dimethylamylamine(Geranium [Stem], caffeine)
3.           Hemo-Rage Black Ultra Concentrate – Nutrex (1,3 Dimethylamylamine)
4.           C4 Extreme - Cellucor (1,3 Dimethylamylamine HCI, caffeine)
5.           Rezolution – LG Sciences (1,3 Dimethylamylamine (Geranium Flower), Bitter Orange (synephrine), caffeine)
6.           Liquid Clenbutrx Hardcore – VPX (Apple Geranium (Pelargonium Odorantissomum) (Leaves) [Std. To 1,3-Dimethylpentylamine],caffeine)
7.           Heat Accelerated – Magnum Nutraceuticals (Geranium Oil Extract, Citrus Aurantium, caffeine)
8.           CryoShock – Neogenix (1,3 Dimethylamylamine, caffeine)
9.           RedLine Black On Blue V2 – VPX (Supra-Amine™ Apple Geranium (Pelargonium Odoratissimum) (Leaves) [Std. To 1,3-Dimethylpentylamine], caffeine)
10.       Motivate – Anabolic Innovations (1,3 Dimethylamylamine, caffeine)

Have you seen reports of individuals failing drug test because of Methylhexaneamine?
Yes, we have seen positive drug test in regards to Methylhexaneamine, and the numbers seem to be rising.  If you are using any of these supplements, please be aware that the presence of Methylhexaneamine will cause a positive drug test.

Please be advised that supplement use can be dangerous to your health and your eligibility.  The REC does not recommend the use of any dietary supplement and encourages athletes to turn to food first for their dietary needs. Athletes must remember that you are always 100% responsible for what you consume.

  1. You are confused as to what Geranium oil is. It is not from the trace element, it is from Pelargonium graveolens (a flower that is also called rose geranium).

This compound was studied intensively by a pharmaceutical company. It is about as safe as caffeine with an LD50 of 39mg/kg injected. Normal doses are 25-50 mg so that is only 0.5mg/kg.

I can understand that dietary supplements being marketed to minors as a way to get ahead in sports can be concerning, but spreading fear via misinformation never helps.

I have been taking jack 3d for months n have been off of it for over two weeks, i have never felt this sick in all of my life, sometimes feels like im dyin. Anyone else have these reactions?

    3. Justin, my son is going through the same thing. Our family is going crazy trying to find information relating to DMAA so that we can help him. He has been working out and taking supplements for two years (he was even sold these products under the age of 18 which I was not aware until recently). He assumed these were safe and natural. He stopped taking them completely a month ago and is having terrible anxiety, brain fog (as he describes it) and just not feeling right since he stopped. Some of the things he was taking that contained that ingredient were Jack 3D, C-4 Extreme and One More Rep. I see by your post that you stopped taking it around the same time. Please tell me how you are doing now and if there is something that you know more on this. Thank you.

    4. Hello, I just stopped taking the stuff and my mind is constantly spinning and trying to catch up with my eyes. I'm always dizzy and clogged up in my brain. How is your son?? Did it go away??

      Delete
    5. If you don't cycle stimulants or take more than the recommended dosage, then of course you will have problems. Your son is most likely an idiot just like the rest of the ignorant sob's that misuse and abuse supplements and screw it up for the rest of us that actually take the time to learn about a supplement before ingesting it based on a recommendation by some college kid working at the local vitamin shop. You all have no one to blame but yourselves and your own ignorance. Read a book sometime, it does wonders.

      Delete
    6. Not sure why you guys are having extreme withdrawals.. It's not crack! The only reason I can think that you may get withdrawals from, is taking it every day for more then 6 months. Its recommended you should be cycling on and off stimulants. 1. To stop a dependence from forming and 2. To stop your body from building a tolerance to it.....

      Delete
  3. I want to attempt to clear things up for those that think we may be confused.

Geranium oil extract is a common label name for methylhexanamine in supplement products. Methylhexaneamine has been shown to be naturally present in geranium oil at amounts less than 1%. This “natural” 1% is not what is being listed or included in supplement products on the market today. They are including higher amounts of methylhexaneamine and referencing ‘geranium oil’ to make the general public feel comfortable with its presence. The amounts included along with stimulants such as caffeine, synephrine, or even octopamine have caused a number of adverse reactions (including failed drug test) to date, as reported to the Resource Exchange Center:
    • Inability to “come down” from high
    • Heart palpitations
    • Increased blood pressure
    • Panic attacks
    • Failed drug test
    • Jitters
We are not in the business of spreading fear, we simply want to help educate the public. In response to this statement:
“I can understand that dietary supplements being marketed to minors as a way to get ahead in sports can be concerning, but spreading fear via misinformation never helps.”
Supplement use by the general public is concerning, but especially concerning when they are marketed and sold to a demographic that no research at all has been done. I can assure you that our information is no misinformation with a great list of references:
Lastly, we answer over 30,000 questions a year pertaining to dietary supplements, and work with a host of wonderful consultants, including:
UCLA anylatical laboratory (WADA certified laboratory, started by renowned scientist Don Catlin)
SMRTL anylatical laboratory (WADA certified laboratory)
List of Pharmacist specializing in PED
    Gary Green (UCLA/MLB)
    Many more…
So please understand, that methylhexanamine is the active ingredient that is of concern, and yes a small amount is present in geranium oil, but dietary supplement manufacturers are using higher amounts of methylhexanamine combined with other stimulants and listing it all under geranium oil at times. Dietary supplement manufacturers are not always truthful…

  6. Definition of half-life: The period in which the radioactivity or number of atoms of a radioactive substance decreases by half; similarly applied to any substance, such as a drug in serum, whose quantity decreases exponentially with time.(Stedmans Medical Dictionary)

    2. If you are not an athlete more than likely 1,3 Dimethylamylamine (aka - Methylhexaneamine, DMAA is not going to be part of the drug testing panel. This does not make you exempt from the possible adverse reactions associated with taking a supplement with multiple stimulants though.

  11. I have read with great interest your posts on methyhexaneamine and its effects. I am unable to name, but a high profile athlete has recently tested positive in a drugs test for methylhexaneammine. It has been found the product (weught loss supplement) which was not meanr ro have it has been contaminated.

Your forum seems to have knowledgeable individuals and I wondered if any were able to answer the following:

    1. Our product has 13.6% methylhexaneamine from the laboratory test results. this suggests not cross contamination but deliberately added?

    2. What are the known side effects short and long term that may be a result from accidental digestion, especially taken by a professional athlete?

    3. If a product was not meant to have methylhexaneamine and the manufacturer says none of their products contain it, how then can it enter a product?

These questions have been asked to the company and legal action is underway which will become public shortly.

thank you for any information and help

  12. I recently took a pre-workout supplement called Hemo Rage Black concentrate which has methylhexaneamine listed as an ingredient.
I test regularly for a court ordered DUI program and they test for alcohol, etg's, and basically all illegal and controlled substances.
I happened to take the Hemo Rage before working out on the morning I tested and the preliminary results of my test came back as positive for
    METHAMPHETAMINE.
Since I don't use Methamphetamine or anything else that could be mistaken for it. ie: ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, etc. I am 100% sure that it was the methylhexaneamine that produced this result.
I am currently awaiting laboratory results to confirm this for the courts, but in answer to your question. I can say with certainty that it CAN show up in tests as Methamphetamine.
My question is how long will it stay in my system?

    1. i actually just got tested today and tested positive for a drug screen of amphetamine. Do the lab results still show use of amphetamines with the use of geranium extract?

  13. I am not sure of the protocols followed by your drug testing group, but I urge you become educated on the testing protocol. We only deal with sports drug testing so our protocols are very strict, even more so than court ordered drug testing. I suggest that you visit this website, http://chem.sis.nlm.nih.gov/chemidplus/, next type in Methamphetamine and look at the chemical structure. Now type in Methylhexaneamine and look at the structure. you will see that there is no relation or connection in my opinion, thus a positive drug test probably is not possible.

  22. Great information and breakdown here. I don't mean to raise a ruckus but "Germanium" IS mentioned in the last sentence of the question in this post "So should I be worried if the label only lists Geranium oil and no other synonyms?" here: "Germanium is a nonessential trace element that has caused nephrotoxicity (kidney injury) and death when used chronically by humans, even at recommended levels of use."

I'm not sure what Germanium, a metalloid, isotope-carrying elemental "rock" recently used in cancer fighting supplements, has to do with the Geranamine supplement discussion here? They're two different compounds with Germanium holding the nefarious title of death and kidney injury-- not Geranamine. As you mention, they're spelled similarly... but definitely not the same as it's confused in the included sentence above...

  32. Does anyone actually know the dose of 1,3 Dimethylamylamine in OxyElite Pro or Jack3d. I went through a phase of feeling like I was dying when I came off Jack3d. It got me in the best shape of my life, then when I stopped it kicked my ass and I felt like I was being pulled out of my body. I called the ambulance a couple times but I got so paranoid and scared. I was smoking cigarettes and drinking at the time also so I quit both those things and eventually things returned to more of a normal state. I recently started taking OxyElite Pro (4 days ago) and have had mild jitters here and there but the workouts have been Great! I wonder how much of the 1,3 is in the prop blend. As to the people who have had issues with these supplements, it gets better after you stop.. I abused the hell out of my supplements. (put 2 scoops of Jack3d in a pint of beer once)... so I believe if you take less than the recommended dosage you;ll probably be fine. Drink Plenty of water, eat healthy etc... but ultimately, if you can do it without.. that's the way to Go! As far as getting that boost for workouts and all that.. Starbucks coffee isn't a bay way to go pre=workout.

  33. Joe - I think the best part of your post was, minus the "if" part, you can do it without (supplements)". These products are dietary supplements so the dosage of all ingredients can change from batch to batch, so using less of the recommend dosage is not a cure. Supplements can include unlisted ingredients that can cause adverse reactions. Thbe best pre-workout is to eat, hydrate, stretch and warm-up! Your warm-up is the bodys natural "boost".

  46. Hi,

First of all nice info here.
I got 8 caps of Black Cats that contain 1,3 DMAA..
I just emailled Applied Nutriceutical to ask how much of it does a cap of Black Cats contain.

They replayed really fast. Its 20mg a cap..i searched on internet and 20mg is not a very high ammount.
Is it oke to use that?
bacause it gives me a good focus (i feel it) for studying. Amazing focus actually.

I see alot of people complain about Jack 3D..well Jack 3D contains a very very high dosage of 1,3 DMMA
    Thats 142Mg!!

here is the list (dont use this products!!)

    1. FlashOver --> 285mg (while the package says 20mg!!)
    2. OVERDOSE --> 217mg
    3. Jack3D --> 142mg

all of these 3 are HEAVY dosage..if u have used this for months, you're fucked over.

what 1M.R. concerned its 85mg.. its STRONG but not Heavy..

But i use black cats and if Applied Nutriceutical company is not lying than its not so bad to use..i think! not sure!

more info about the 1,3 DMAA dosage here --> geranamine.org

I just realized that stuff just isn't for me. I am doing research because ACE a new diet pill has it in it and I have an empty bottle of oxi elite pro and the geranium stem is in ACE. Bad news for me gonna stay away.

  53. I have been dizzy, nauseous, vertigo, headaches, visual disturbances, panic attacks. Used Jack3d for 2 years. Had every blood test you could think of and a MRI. All negative. Never felt so bad ever in my 28 years. It's been 3 months and I'm just starting to feel almost normal again. Never ever again will I take a pre-workout supp.
